How To Add Lighting To Your Luxury Kitchen

views

Even if the majority of your home is well lit, having a single room with less natural light or dim light is not ideal – and this is especially true when it comes to your luxury kitchen.

Natural light is one of your home’s most desired features. In fact, according to a study conducted by Origin Global, natural light is the first thing people look for when buying a new home.

However, kitchens often lack natural light, especially if your kitchen is north facing or at the rear of your house where the sun only shines part of the time – and a dingy, dark kitchen can really drag down your home.

Using light and bright colors on the walls

One of the easiest (and most effective) ways to increase the amount of natural light that enters your kitchen is by painting the walls a bright, bright colour. White has the highest light reflectance of any colour, so it will reflect and amplify all the natural light that is coming into your kitchen. If you have a dark, dingy kitchen and need to add more natural light, then unfortunately, you may have to give up on dark dramatic kitchen walls and statement feature walls. Stick to light, open and simple white or chic light grey.

Using glossier paints

Continuing with the previous advice, if you choose a brighter, lighter colour, opt for glossier finishes. You don’t have to go for a full gloss finish (which can lead to glare), but you may want to consider a glossier finish than what you’re currently using – so if you prefer a matte finish, opt for eggshell or a semi-gloss finish. If you’re struggling with natural light, go as high as a full gloss finish, or as low as a regular gloss finish.

Using reflective surfaces

We all know the old adage – “it takes a mirror to make a room bigger”. It’s a bit of a myth, isn’t it? The same is true when it comes to mirrors – they’re a great way to increase the natural light in your room!

Reflective surfaces reflect natural light, which means your kitchen will be brighter and feel bigger. Plus, you’ll double the amount of space you’d have if you had a dining table in the kitchen.

If you’re running out of wall space in your kitchen, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! One of our favourite ways to decorate your kitchen wall is by using glass tiles, or high gloss ceramic tiles on splashbacks and units. Not only will this add a nice reflective gleam, but it’ll also keep your kitchen lit up with natural light and look stylish and trendy.

 Polished floors

One of the easiest and most overlooked ways to keep your kitchen well lit is with your flooring. Dark or matte slate finishes absorb light, while a lighter, glossy finish such as ceramic, light colour wood or high gloss vinyl will accentuate natural light. And what’s great about shiny surfaces is that they’re easy to clean and sweep. Whether it’s milk painted wood or versatile vinyl, you can’t go wrong with a finish that works with your kitchen.
