Thus we present to you a guide on how to fix a washing machine. This step-by-step article will navigate you through the process of fixing all the common issues with a washing machine.

So, let’s dive right in.

  • Multimeter electrical tester
  • Flashlight
  • Nut driver set
  • Pliers
  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Screwdriver set

Common Washing Machine Problems & Their Solution

It’s quite common to see some parts of the washing machine failing from time to time. Although you get new parts from places like Milnor washer parts, it’s still a good idea to know how to fix them.

And that’s what we’ll show you. Stay tuned.

Problem 1: No Water

Sometimes you’ll see that the water won’t flow through the washer – this is a common issue.

This can happen for two reasons. One is because you forgot to plug the main cord in or you overheated the motor.

Well, solving the first problem is pretty simple. All you have to do is plug the cord into the outlet. Then the water should start flowing in again. Yep, it’s that easy at times.

However, if you have an overheated motor, then all you have to do is wait. You see, the motors are that advanced that they can turn on all by themselves. But if this happens regularly, call for a professional’s help.

While you’re at it, inspect the lid switch on the washer to see if it’s in the right place or not. You see, there’s a little piece of plastic that lets the washing machine work only when it’s closed.

Safety tip: Disconnect the power source before working on the inner part of the machine.

Problem 2: Draining Problems

We agree that the washing machine is quite useful. It has some fantastic features you might not know about. But it sure can be bothersome when it creates problems like draining issues.

Now, tending to this matter is quite crucial. Otherwise, you will be facing flooding and water damage issues very quickly.

This problem can arise for two reasons: a jammed drain hose or a clogged drainpipe.

Now, for a clogged-up drain hose, you need to detach it from the washer. And then use a garden hose to clear out anything that’s blocking its way.

As for the drainpipe, you’ll have to remove the external cabinet of the machine. You have two choices here. One is to lift the seat completely off or only remove front and back panels.

Then take off the pump. While doing this, you’ll face a pump belt & three retaining screws. Then check if the pump is blocked or not.

If it is, then remove the object quickly. And if that isn’t the case, then you might have broken impeller blades, or the motor may have stopped working. In both of these scenarios, you’ll have to replace the pump.

Problem 3: Weird Noises

At times your washing machine might end up making different noises. Now, you might hear weird noises for various reasons.

But you mainly have to focus on the sound. Typical examples: you might hear gurgling noises because of a clogged-up drain pipe.

On the other hand, a clicking noise might be because of an object stuck in the washer drain. And a buzzing noise usually comes because of a blocked pump.

Now, the problems might be different, but the solution is the same. Simply identify where the sound is coming from and then take out the parts on that side.

Later on, clear out whatever object is blocking that particular place with a garden hose. And that’s it. Your washing machine will stop making noise after that.

Problem 4: Washer Won’t Spin

Another thing that can go wrong is when the washer stops spinning. This can happen if the machine becomes unbalanced.

You see, if you throw in too many clothes into the washer, they don’t get distributed evenly. Thus the machine will not spin properly.

Other issues can be a broken lid switcher or a worn-out belt.

As for the unbalanced issue, you can either redistribute the load or make separate and smaller loads.

As for a faulty lid switch, you need to check first. And for this, use a multimeter to test alternating current. If there’s no reading, install a new switch altogether.

The same goes for the worn-out belt. Simply get a new one.

Problem 5: Water Leakage

Lastly, you might face water leakage problems. This sometimes happens due to a loose hose connection. Other times, fill hoses tend to become flimsy, and that might result in water leakage.

We agree that those were a lot of problems. But now, let’s look at the solution. For loose hose connection, simply clean the clog that disrupted its position. And if that doesn’t work, replace the hose altogether.

As for the fill hoses, you should simply tighten them. But don’t go overboard, though.

To Wrap Up

Alright, folks, that’s all there’s to know about how to fix a washing machine. Now, if you see an issue, you’ll know what to do.

Remember, the main part is to first identify the problem. After that, you can work towards the solution. And when in doubt, call the professional! Good luck with your washing machine!
