The H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports at The University of Texas at Austin is the world’s foremost archive and museum dedicated to preserving the history of physical culture. Opened in 2009 thanks to generous gifts from the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation and the Betty and Joe Weider Foundation, the Center’s mission is to collect, conserve, and exhibit materials spanning the breadth of weight training, bodybuilding, athletic conditioning, alternative medicine, and broader self-improvement practices. Under the stewardship of Drs. Jan and Terry Todd—both former powerlifting champions—the Stark Center has grown into the largest and most complete archive of its kind and is officially recognized as an Olympic Studies Center by the International Olympic Committee.
Housed on the 5th floor of the North End Zone in Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, the Stark Center occupies a 27,500-square-foot facility outfitted with nearly two miles of compact shelving for its vast collections. Within this space you’ll find the Joe and Betty Weider Physical Culture Museum—a 10,000-square-foot gallery featuring permanent, rotating, and interactive exhibits—as well as an elegant Reading Room for study, an access-controlled archives vault, a dedicated Art Gallery showcasing sculpture and paintings, and seminar and processing rooms for research and public programs.
