If your home is located near a railroad track, it may decrease in value because no one wants to be wakened by a passing train in the middle of the night. If a potential buyer has children or pets, safety may also be an issue if you are too close to a railroad track. 

Being near a highway or major road can cause similar problems. The sound of traffic and the glare of headlights can be very disquieting.

 If your home is near power lines, it can also lower your property value. Although studies have been inconclusive, some people believe that power lines can be bad for your health. They are certainly unsightly and the noise from them can cause a person to have insomnia.

Unusual Modifications

Although it may be good to have your own style, it is not always a good idea to distinguish your home from others in the neighborhood. Neighborhoods tend to have a similar aesthetic theme. Some people may not like it if you add a sunroof or a porch to a structure or if you put in a backyard tennis court when no one else has one.  It may ultimately hurt the value of your property. 

The Color Scheme

It is also a good idea for a home’s exterior to be the same color as those around it. If you choose anything radically different from the overall look of the neighborhood, you may have problems selling the house. It is best to keep the exterior conservative and similar to the homes in the immediate vicinity. The interiors should be a neutral color, so potential buyers can get a good idea of the home’s potential without the distraction of loud paint or ornate wallpaper. 

Finding a Realtor
