3 Reasons to Switch to Mineral Sunscreen

If you thought that all types of sunscreen were pretty much the same, then you might need to think again. Mineral sunscreens are very different to traditional chemical varieties, not least because they have the world’s coral reefs in mind!

In this blog, we look at 3 reasons why you should consider switching to a mineral sunscreen from your chemical-based sunscreen. Believe us when we say that the reasons for doing so are compelling! So, without further ado, let’s begin.

Reason #1 – Mineral sunscreen lays on top of the skin

Mineral sunscreens are very different from chemical sunscreens – even down to the way they protect your skin. Chemical sunscreens work by converting UV rays into heat which is then absorbed into the skin. However, mineral sunscreens lay on top of the skin’s surface. That’s because the two active ingredients, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide act like tiny mirrors that bounce that UV rays away from your skin.

UV light can also destroy the active ingredients in chemical sunscreens, leaving you unprotected. On the other hand, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide (the active ingredients in mineral sunscreens) do not degrade in UV light, so you stay protected.

Reason #2 – Mineral Sunscreens Are Less Irritating to Skin Conditions

If you have acne, sensitive skin, eczema or rosacea, mineral sunscreen is often a better option. The active ingredients Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide tend to be easier on the skin than chemicals included in other types of sunscreens.

There are also non-comedogenic face sunscreen options that won’t clog pores which is great for acne-prone or oily skin.

Reason #3 – Broad spectrum protection dermatologists trust

Ask any dermatologist what sunscreen you should use and almost all of them will say two things: broad spectrum protection and an SPF of 30 or higher. Both have to do with the amount of protection a sunscreen offers.

Broad spectrum means the sunscreen blocks both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. An SPF of 30 or higher will protect you from at least 97% of UV rays. Mineral sunscreens containing both Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide fit the bill which is why dermatologists recommend them.
